The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 14th year, connects 94 of the world's greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. It brings mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 700 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of the global GDP. C40's 'Deadline 2020' report sets out the critical role that the world's major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40 Global Initiatives

In the Global Initiatives directorate, C40 convenes networks which help cities replicate, improve and accelerate climate action. These city-only working groups provide for honest knowledge exchange, enabling cities to tap into the global expertise of their peers as well as connect with technical partners. Through networks, cities find opportunities to undertake joint projects in areas of mutual interest and benefit. C40 networks also amplify individual city solutions by providing a global platform for showcasing city successes. The result is that cities' climate actions to reduce GHGs and climate risks are bolder, more impactful, implemented faster, at a lower cost and with less resources than if they were to go it alone.

The Municipal Building Efficiency Network brings together officials trying to improve improve the energy efficiency of the buildings the city own, lease or manage. Energy consumed in buildings accounts for around 50% of C40 city emissions, on average, and as much as 75% for many cities. Municipal buildings contribute a significant proportion of building emissions in a diverse range of C40 cities and they offer a large opportunity for rapid action. Cities have a high degree of control over their municipal buildings, meaning they can directly introduce energy efficiency improvements, reduce energy consumption, cut their emissions and save public money. Municipal buildings can also act as flagships to pilot new ideas, demonstrate leadership, and inspire other building owners and users.

C40's China Buildings Programme, within the Energy and Buildings team, is supporting programmes in the cities of Beijing, Fuzhou, Qingdao and Shanghai (Changning District) to deliver ambitious climate action by 2020 and share knowledge with cities across China and internationally.

The Role
The successful intern will support the Energy and Buildings team on three specific topics: helping cities take forward joint projects to reduce emissions from their own buildings; developing the next phase of the C40 China Buildings programme; and providing communications to highlight the need and benefits of bold policies for zero carbon buildings.

If selected, working a 40-hour week, s/he will have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in a range of subjects, gaining valuable experience working with international colleagues in a fast-paced and exciting global organization. Professional development for interns is a priority in the team, including encouragement to shape objectives to their interests, and access to mentoring by a senior colleague.


The responsibilities of the role will include:

* Organising the logistics for virtual webinars for groups of cities, and physical meetings in cities such as Mexico City, Copenhagen, and Ney York, to help them take forward their efforts to reduce emissions from municipal buildings (some travel may be required).
* Developing PowerPoint presentations and well-designed documents to support the transfer of cutting-edge energy and buildings policies between China and other global cities.
* Producing written and visual materials to support a compelling narrative on zero carbon buildings in cities.
* Other coordination and support duties within the Energy and Buildings team as needed.

Person Specification

* A background (academic or extracurricular) in climate change, urban planning or related climate action sectors - knowledge of energy and buildings policy a strong advantage.
* Strong writing/communication and research skills (fluent in English); Chinese language an advantage.
* Proactive self-starter with ability to work independently.
* Experience of organising physical or virtual events preferred.
* Experience in developing research and/or communications materials preferred, especially. experience with graphic design.
